I write for Adults and Young Adults and focus on historical fiction - both recent and not recent at all.
I've recently completed an adult novel partly set in the 1960s and partly in present day. Rules For Sailing By is the story of 19 year old STELLA VIRTUE, whose quest to escape her overbearing mother and find her own philosophy for life, uncovers more about her family’s past than she has bargained for. The gap year to South America that she had planned with her boyfriend and best friend has fallen apart disastrously but Stella is still determined to go. Then, on the eve of leaving, her Grandpa LEN – last of the Scottish Antarctic whalers—announces that he’s coming with her...
My current work in progress is set in the 1940s and is still under wraps!
My unpublished YA novel, Pest Maiden is set against the horrifying backdrop of war and pestilence of 14th Century Flanders and England and is the story a young girl fighting for her life as she is accused of sorcery and branded a plague-bearing Pest Maiden. Pest Maiden was longlisted for the Cornerstones Wow Factor prize.
I also write short stories and poetry for adults. In 2013 I was named as an ‘Edinburgh Emerging Writer’ by the Edinburgh City of Literature ‘Story Shop' and was invited to read my story ‘Somersault with two and a half twists’ at the Edinburgh International Book Festival that year. Here's me talking about it.
